Enabling USB MIDI on Xiaomi (MIUI) phones

If you want to make music with your computer without having to use the keyboard and mouse, you will need to use a MIDI device. But MIDI instruments are very expensive, and their price tag can be a roadblock for your hobby. Luckily, it is possible to use your Android device as a MIDI instrument.

While this is a built-in Android feature, Xiaomi doesn’t show this option by default. Don’t worry though, the functionality still exists in your phone. All you need to do to switch to USB MIDI mode is to go to the Developer Settings menu on your phone and find USB Mode.

The option is called “Select USB configuration”. It is under the Networking section of the developer options.

How to enable developer mode

Here’s how to enable developer mode / developer settings on Xiaomi phones.

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Click “About phone” (should be near the top)
  3. Tap the “MIUI version” 5-6 times until you see a message that says developer mode is enabled.

After enabling this, you will have a Developer options button under Settings > Additional Settings.

I have the problem using a MIDI device with android 12, MIUI ver 13 global. Android is unable to create the MIDI ports (all of this was working on Lenovo device running android 6), and setting the default USB config to MIDI or any other state doesn't solve the problem.
